Between the Lines

Format: Event
Where: Peredelkino, Yandex Maps
Russia, 2023

The event is prepared as a journey through the hidden meanings of the Peredelkino, the legendary writers' colony. Founded in 1934 and became the mecca of Soviet and post-Soviet writers, now this place is an important cultural hub and a point of attraction for tourists and Muscovites. Despite the fact that the number of guests here is estimated at three thousand people daily, until now the only opportunity to get into the essence of the Village of Writers was an excursion with a professional guide.

Now everything has changed. The Yandex Maps service together with the Peredelkino House of Creativity has launched online routes “Between the Lines”, which will allow everyone to immerse themselves in the historical context of Peredelkino using a mobile phone as a navigator and a personal guide. Creative studio Applied Ingredients has prepared and implemented an event-the opening of the service for media and bloggers who will share the news with their audience.

The name “Between the Lines” obliged us, like writers, masters of the past, to turn to disguised meanings. Inside the program there were scattered references and hints to the historical context and the realities of the present, an attentive viewer could find them in all the chapters - gastronomic rituals, table decor and choice of dishes, in the route of the excursion and those events that occur on the way, in the sounds, words and songs of the concert.

How to convey the taste of the outgoing summer and the impending autumn? How to express gratitude to the place where the spirit of the great writers of the past rests? This object became the starting point in the mythology of the event "Between the Lines". Whether it's a biomorphic formation or a post-apocalyptic artefact, a tombstone, a mound. A pond of curved glass, spilled over its surface, became a receptacle, no, not of Monet's water lilies, but rather traces of rain, stagnant swamp water.

The small bites located on the installation are a thoughtful visual and taste reflection of the champagne with notes of autumn undergrowth (from french “sous-bois”) offered to the guests.

Sound Installation

In a sound installation dedicated to the study of archival recordings of the writers' village, music producer Oleg Buyanov refers to archival materials of Peredelkino poets, writers and composers. The author combines these recordings with the noise of serial Soviet radios of the 60-90s of the last century.

Digitising and transforming the material from the original sound carriers, the author builds a dialogue between material and ephemeral objects of the past and present. The installation emphasises the beauty of the historical process in which, under the influence of time, not only the medium changes, but also its function — sound.

The starting point for the creation of the work was the essay Ghosts Of My Life by Mark Fisher, an English journalist who established the concept of hauntology in musical discourse. Mark Fischer first uses this term to describe a state where culture is obsessed with the idea of "lost possible futures."

Cake from LMFAO: Black currants, anise seeds, biscuit soaked in cognac and black tea.

Challah is a solemn bread - it is eaten on holidays, so it is prepared with the addition of butter and eggs, and its shape embodies generosity: part is broken off in favour of the clergy. For this dinner, challah bread has not only symbolic, but also functional advantages: it is convenient to break it with a neighbour at the table.

Butter is a gastronomic medium, an edible clay that takes various forms. Despite the fact that it is traditionally served for breakfast, this product was much more common in the Peredelkino town of writers than “evening” olive oil.

Anchovies are small fish, still sounding exotic in Russia, compared to the same sprats. However, in Europe, tin cans with sardines (read: sprats) are signed exactly like this: “anchovies”. This snack is a verbal bridge and a taste exchange between the diet of the town of writers of the last century and the modern global gastronomic realities of the present century.

Parsnip soup with buckwheat popcorn and autumn nettles. In Russian, the name of the root vegetable (the main component of the dish) coincides with the surname of Boris Pasternak, the famous Soviet writer. Silky cream soup is served with buckwheat popcorn and young nettles. Despite the fact that its leaves have a delicate and smooth texture, some of them can still prick. However, these “burns” are absolutely harmless for food consumption and are designed to draw attention to the drama of the famous Soviet writer. It was here that he wrote a work objectionable to the regime, “Doctor Zhivago”, for which the author was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1950’s. The USSR officials and the Writers' Union, through harassment and denunciations, forced him to refuse the prize, and a few years later Boris Pasternak died. The soup is called “Bullying of Writer".

Game jelly with asparagus, guinea fowl eggs and truffle. Books are a product of preserving thought: the author puts words on its pages that can live for centuries. This dish is an homage to canned spring, dense forests, fabulous birds. Young shoots of asparagus, eggs of royal birds and black truffle make their way through the transparent structure of the jelly cooked from the hare.

Potato "croissant" with porcini and sheep cheese sauce. The French word croissant translates as a crescent moon. The connection between the French language and literary thought in Russia is known to everyone. On this very evening, during the serving of the dish, guests will be able to see the waning crescent moon in the sky connecting the gastronomic and literary traditions of different countries.

Pithivier with meat of European fallow deer, dried cranberries and rice. This dish is solemn and rich in its essence, it is the carrier of two main messages. Firstly, it is made from deer. It is known that the muscles of this animal, due to their being in constant tone, are much harder than the same tissues of industrial animals. Accordingly, it needs to be prepared in a special way so that the eater does not have problems with its absorption. The second aspect symbolises the controversial status of the historical interaction between Europe and Russia, the most acute phases of which were the Soviet times and the present days. The composition of the ingredients (rice, dried fruits) directly point to the traditional memorial dish - kutyu, which is usually served at the wake and the noble European deer is its main component.
