Recursion

Performance/Installation
Moscow
Opening of GES-2
2021

Recursion is a performance in three parts, which expands the meaning of recursion through the gastronomic medium. It was inspired by the artistic practice of Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson (b. 1976), who is known for his ironic and hypnotic loops that merge historical, social and mass media references with everyday banality.

The event took place in the frames of the opening of GES-2, with support of V-A-C Foundation in 2021, and included three parts:

Dining Room

Dishes are set on the table on metal trays, in such a sequence that their elements reproduce each other, forming the principle of recursion. The performer replaces the food trays, giving a dynamic aspect to the process. The appearance of the performance is reinforced by branches and driftwood, which also represent the concept of recursion.

Kitchen

A performer collects desserts of three colors, taking out layers of marmalade placed on industrial pallets, slicing it and covering it with three types of sprinkles. This repetitive process is witnessed throughout the evening. The public has access to the sweets and can taste those made from substandard pieces of marmalade. At the end of the event, thirty paper bags with desserts are on the table, which one may take. A geometric pattern embodying the principle of recursion in the branches of a fruit tree lies inside bags.

Veranda

This performance takes place on a veranda in the cold December air. The main body of this work is a frozen fish, described as stroganina, which is served from an ice box. The fish is repetitively sliced into thin strips, which appear identical but deform or twist differently, depending on the movement of the knife or the deepness of the cut. Fish flowing from a river, repetitive actions of slicing, the strips - all this resembles the recursion principle.
